Happy release day, YUUN!
Are we still waiting for the future or are we already running after ourselves? Are we lost in space or in between places? YUUN from Würzburg have set their sights high for their debut album “I’ve Got My Head In The Cloud, But The Server Is Down” which is released today.
Hardly any German band puts so much emphasis on their sound, while at the same time writing such substantial yet accessible songs. And who voluntarily takes it upon themselves to rely on flashlights and walkie-talkies during album recording? Without them, it’s simply impossible to find your way around the slowly decaying former MDR broadcasting building and its many studios. In this lost space in Weimar, YUUN have made themselves at home for the duration of the recordings. They found furniture for it scattered throughout the building. A table from the large former dance hall; a chair from the basement, where the mold grows centimeters thick and furry from the walls, so that it is already difficult to breathe after 10 minutes. When they are out at night in the huge, creepy corridors of the building, which still dates from the Nazi era, Basti, Jannis and Max from YUUN communicate with the help of three small colorful toy walky-talkies so as not to get lost.
The result is songs somewhere on the border to pop with thoughtful lyrics and a complex overall sound, but never forgetting to be catchy. Musically, YUUN move between the lightness of a Mac DeMarco, the melancholy of bands like Beach House or Men I Trust and an obsession with detail and experimentation a la James Blake. Between playful synth melodies and dense drum sounds, it’s clear that they’re always looking for the space for the next hook with a lot of flair. In doing so, they passionately experiment with analog synthesizers, chase guitar signals, small children’s keyboards, Japanese harps and everything else they can get their hands on through countless small effect pedals or alienate samples beyond recognition.
After YUUN already rotate since last year with their first EP through various playlists on Spotify, Apple Music and Co. or on the radio between culture and young programs, now the debut album “I’ve Got My Head In The Cloud, But The Server Is Down” is released – not only digitally on all streaming and download portals, but also on transparent vinyl with 12-page magazine including 3D cover as well as on CD (alternatively also available with magazine).
For the first time, the three are bringing their wavy dream pop extensively to German stages with their own tour:
