After the successful release of their debut EP last September, YUUN released their last single “Freedom” on April 7th before the release of their first album “I’ve got my head in the cloud, but the server is down” on May 5th.
After some more electronic tracks, YUUN show with “Freedom” that they can also do guitar-heavy indie anthems – with more BPM than any reasonable speed limit. While musically the track just puts you in a good mood and doesn’t let a leg stand still, the song’s content deals with what the concept of freedom means to us nowadays and how it has changed over the past decades and become less tangible. What does it do to a society when, for decades, people talk more about open markets than open borders? When liberal means that big corporations must keep their freedoms and people must comply? And how free are we as long as not all people have the same opportunities. “Freedom” has no answers to offer, but it has packed a few pointed questions into some very catchy lines.
YUUN recorded the song and the whole album not in a warm recording studio, but in the Funkhaus Weimar, which has been decaying for 20 years. For the recordings YUUN have nested in the former studio rooms of the empty building – without running water and with a working socket in the whole building. However, it will be much cozier when YUUN go on their first own tour in May to bring their debut album to the stage:
